Guide photographic training with James Gifford
30th April 2020
The Ker & Downey Botswana guides recently took part in an annual photography course with renowned photographer, author and travel writer James Gifford.
The guides were divided into two groups – Beginner & Intermediate.
The Beginner course covered a lot of photographic technique. The training culminated in an oral assessment of both the photographic fundamentals and the specialist guiding techniques for when guiding photographers.
Beginner Course: Baams, Owner, Phefo, Otsile and Samson
The Intermediate course consisted of our most enthusiastic photographers; they had already taken the beginner course a year prior. They all have a very solid grasp of the technical fundamentals and have taken their ability to guide photographers to the next level. James covered various aspects of this, such as when to shoot into the sun, using side-lighting, and even how to use creative exposures to create striking images, particularly in black and white.
Intermediate Course: Opie, Simon, Kenny, Lucas & Robby
Both courses took place at Dinaka over the period of 2 weeks.

The book “Wildlife Photography in Botswana”, co-authored by James and Steve Stockholm, now takes its place in the guides arsenal of reference books. Recommended read for any safari goer.
The capturing of a fishing leopard. “Savute” is another of James publications is a delightful insight into this mysterious area and its wildlife.
We consider James part of the KDB family, for many years he has produced the beautiful images and videos of our camps.
